Executive Summary

Between November 2025 and May 2026, a municipality client participated in a Trigo supported self-care pilot involving 107 registered employees across six participating locations.

The pilot combined physical activity tracking, wellbeing tools, lifestyle assessment, educational support and optional digital physiotherapy access within a single supported self-care platform.

Across the seven-month reporting period:

  • 107 employees registered for the programme.
  • 896,604 engagement points were recorded.
  • 69 employees remained active during May 2026.
  • 85 participants recorded WHO-aligned physical activity levels at least once.
  • 22 digital musculoskeletal consultations were delivered.
  • 11 employees accessed physiotherapy support.

The pilot demonstrated measurable differences between highly engaged users and low-engagement users across participation frequency, activity engagement and feature adoption.

The pilot findings align closely with the wider workplace wellbeing and digital health literature, which identifies participation, physical activity, behavioural reinforcement and sustained engagement as key success factors. The engagement patterns observed during the pilot are consistent with behaviours associated with effective digital wellbeing interventions in published research.

The Challenge

The client sought to explore whether a digital supported self-care model could:

  • Encourage employee participation in wellbeing activities.
  • Support physical activity and healthy lifestyle behaviours.
  • Provide access to early musculoskeletal support.
  • Generate workforce-level wellbeing insight through anonymous reporting.

The pilot was designed as an engagement and participation programme rather than an absence-management or clinical-outcomes programme.

The Solution

Employees received access to the Trigo platform, including:

  • Physical activity tracking.
  • Sleep and hydration tracking.
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing tools.
  • Educational resources.
  • Reward and engagement mechanisms.
  • Lifestyle Health Check assessment.
  • Optional digital physiotherapy consultations.

The programme used a reward-based engagement model that recognised participation across multiple wellbeing activities.

Pilot Participation

107 employees registered for the programme.

The reporting period covered 212 days between 1 November 2025 and 31 May 2026.

During this period:

  • 896,604 total engagement points were recorded.
  • The highest individual score reached 37,316 points.
  • 69 employees remained active during May 2026.

The dataset demonstrated three distinct engagement groups:

  • High Engagement 27 employees (25.2%)
  • Medium Engagement 54 employees (50.5%)
  • Low Engagement 26 employees (24.3%)

Participation Patterns

Clear behavioural differences were observed between engagement groups.

High-engagement participants averaged:

  • 71.6 rewarded first-login days.
  • 16,458 activity points.
  • 3,172 behaviour points.
  • 3.9 feature areas used.

Low-engagement participants averaged:

  • 3.0 rewarded first-login days.
  • 115 activity points.
  • 72 behaviour points.
  • 0.9 feature areas used.

The findings show that higher engagement was associated with:

  • More frequent return behaviour.
  • Greater activity participation.
  • Broader use of platform features.

The pilot report does not establish causality, but it does demonstrate clear behavioural differences between engagement cohorts.

Physical Activity Findings

Physical activity represented the largest source of programme engagement.

Across the pilot:

  • 50,324 points (83.7%) were generated through recorded physical activity.
  • 146,280 points (16.3%) were generated through in-app behaviours and other actions.

Using the programme’s WHO-aligned activity threshold:

  • 85 of 107 participants (79.4%) achieved the threshold at least once.
  • 22 participants achieved the threshold regularly using the programme definition.
  • All high-engagement users achieved the threshold at least once.

These findings indicate that recorded physical activity represented the majority of measured engagement activity during the pilot.

Lifestyle Health Check Findings

A voluntary Lifestyle Health Check was completed by 16 employees.

The assessment identified several population-level opportunities for improvement:

  • 69% reported a BMI of 25 or above.
  • 44% reported rarely or never exercising.
  • 50% reported moderate or high stress.
  • 75% reported fruit and vegetable intake below recommended levels.

The pilot report notes that participation should increase in future phases to improve representativeness and strengthen workforce insight.

Musculoskeletal Support

The pilot included confidential digital physiotherapy access.

During the reporting period:

  • 22 consultations were delivered.
  • 11 employees accessed support.
  • Consultations were delivered entirely through telehealth.
  • Three of six participating locations used the service.

The pilot findings identify increased awareness and self-referral as opportunities for future programme development.

Employee Feedback

A separate employee survey was completed by 30 participants.

Survey findings included:

  • 63% described themselves as regular or occasional users.
  • 77% reported some level of platform usage.
  • 55% rated Trigo as very useful or quite useful.

The most frequently reported benefits were:

  • Everyday reminders (47%).
  • Motivation to be active (47%).

These findings align with the wider engagement data, which showed stronger participation among users who returned regularly and engaged across multiple platform features.

Key Findings

The pilot demonstrated:

  • Sustained participation among a meaningful proportion of users.
  • Clear behavioural differences between engagement cohorts.
  • Strong association between engagement and broader platform usage.
  • High levels of recorded physical activity participation.
  • Successful delivery of digital physiotherapy services.
  • The creation of an initial anonymous workforce wellbeing baseline.

Importantly, the pilot measured engagement, participation and utilisation.

It did not measure:

  • Sickness absence reduction.
  • Productivity improvement.
  • Return-on-investment outcomes.
  • Workforce performance outcomes.

These outcomes would require future longitudinal evaluation.

The pilot findings identified several opportunities for future development:

  • Structured engagement communications.
  • Progress visibility and achievement recognition.
  • Increased Lifestyle Health Check participation.
  • Greater awareness of digital physiotherapy services.
  • Expanded workforce participation support.

The findings support continued exploration of supported self-care, engagement and participation as part of a broader preventative wellbeing strategy.
